From the symptoms it sounds like the first suspect is tired capacitors. Presumably in that amp they are large, somewhat expensive, easy to replace, and well worth it. Some upgrades might be possible, .......

A quick (not exhaustive) check of the characteristics suggests they are indistinguishable from each other at low currents. If they are germanium then they should have lower voltage drop, but both are .......
