Another question, I've been getting a good bit of hum from them (the hum pots have no effect on it, either increasing or decreasing). Do you think the rectifier type could play a role in this? thanks. .......

I bought a used pair, but they came with 5R4GY types - but I wondered if they we're the usual rectifiers, as I didn't recall him using them (I followed his work in the past). Do you think it would be .......

YOU can find cheap, no-brand ones on Amazon. I don't know of better ones who do the spdif to usb conversion though. .......

Don't have the circuit diagram handy but it is a Welborne DRD (direct reactance drive) based on Jack Elliano schematic. .......

Thanks. I thought initially that it might just be a bad tube, but having it happen twice in the same amp (right channel) seems unlikely. What might cause a change in the filament supply? thanks again. .......

I have had a AN Kit's 3.1 special edition (equivalent to a signature). I thought it sounded quite good, but nothing very special - I had other dad's that I thought sounded better - e.g. Aqua Dac La Vo .......

I use a Innuos Zenith. The Zen, see link below, would seem to meet your needs. Very easy to use and setup - went from an iMac to this and I find it easier to use than the Mac. .......

I have the AN DAC (kit) 3.1 signature. It can take 96/24 hi-rez material, but I think it only handles 18 bits. I do play my 96/24 downloads through it. I use a IFi USB-SPDIF convertor for it Very nice .......

You don't have to cut down the Abby's - they've already done it for you. See the Noogi's in the link below. Only 20" high, and 6" by 6". They'd probably need a sub, and dynamics would be limited, but .......

Interesting - that's exactly what I was wondering about - whether ultrasonic noise can affect/excite tinnitus. By the I've had my hearing tested and it doesn't show any holes or obvious hearing damage .......

I had the Vienna Acoustic Beethoven's for a number of years - and did run them with 8 watt Welborne's for awhile. While it worked for a time, clearly other speakers do much better with SET's. Overall, .......

The differences seem to depend very much on which tubes are used in the Tulips. A buddy has the Tulip amp and we had compared the Laurel's and the Tulip on my Adire HE10.1's. - Tulips had Sovteks then .......

If you stick with current production, then the replacement tube costs are not high; even NOS for the 6X4 and the 6BM8 are not very high, but the 6DJ8's can be very high for NOS. The Cary was the same .......

Actually, they don't ping-pong the sound, its just that because they are so hard right/left that their is little center-fill and it breaks down the stereo illusion. But I don't mind as it sounds soooo .......

Those are the 16, 8, and 4 ohm taps. Match to the impedance on your speakers. Although your speakers could say 8 ohm nominal, in some cases they have considerable drops and the 4ohm might sound better .......

As you exaggerate the "brightness" of the Sony SACD players. Personally, I find "bright" sounding equipment very aversive, and tend to err on the side of warmth. While not a warm CDP, as are some tube .......

I agree with you in that I have no use for MC, but the XA777 makes use of all 6 DACS when you use the Stereo mode. So there are triple DACS for each channel, lowering the noise floor. So they do make .......

My experience parallels that of Crimson's. The bass just seems to disappear for awhile - don't panic, it comes back. And in my experience it keeps improving after 200 hours until you have about 400-50 .......

Last I checked, the 300B version was about $1700. Don Garber is a wonderful person to work with. A real gentleman. The basic Fi X used to be around 900, and the integrated version about 100 more. ::: .......

I've heard the CAR (Classic Audio Reproduction) T-3's and T-5's and I think they would be quite worthwhile auditioning. Their excellent speakers, incredibly well built, and worth their price. I believ .......

Personally, I feel it does deliver. But I could see where the difference wouldn't matter or be perceived by others. Among the factors that could mask differences are: quality of the SACD unit, quality .......

If you usually listen in the low 80's you should be fine. I have a pair of the Laurel's and they are matched with less SET friendly speakers - VA Beethoven's, 4ohm speaks, w/91db. efficiency. It can g .......

I love mine. I think they are flexible in terms of the kind of amplification, but you will get more out of them with better your amplification. I have heard them with McCormack SS amps, with Quicksilv .......

Yes, that is the fly in the ointment. If not for that, I think I probably wouldn't have any hesitation as modding a 9000 would give me improved sound on CD, DVD, and SACD, while the other solutions on .......

It wasn't that I found the Planet too bright - if I paid attention to the different frequencies, everything seemed to be good and in place, but the gestalt just wasn't there for me - the music didn't .......

Of course most people in this forum will say tubes. As will I. I have heard the Monarchy monoblock 100's, in my system. For ss they are a very nice sweet amp - but the owner did say hum was sometimes .......

I think it is very speaker dependent - I have Vienna Acoustic Beethoven's in my main system (91db, 4ohm nominal, 3ohm minimum); runnning off of the 4ohm tap on the M-500 I had no problem reaching desi .......

I have both the base AES Superamp (with Svet Kt-88's) and the Consonance M-500 (AKA - "Billie"). I think the Super is an excellent amp, particularly in the mid-range and with voice; it isn't strong in .......

Of all the equipment that have passed through my house (and that's a lot), my wife said that the one change I made that was very significant to her was going from SS to tube amplification - the speake .......
