I find tone controls to be useful for tweaking different recordings. For instance, the album 'You', by Gong, has a rolled off high end. Same with Steve Hillage 'Fish Rising'. A bit of extra HF energy .......

All of my older non true RMS DVM's are Fluke (77 series), and they seem fairly accurate. I only use my newer True RMS Fluke meters now. .......

Most non true RMS meters can measure frequencies wider than 60Hz, but you only get an accurate RMS value for sine waves only. A 'true RMS' meter will give accurate RMS values for non sine wave wavefor .......

I get the stuff made to insulate ductwork. Its not the paper backed stuff used for insulation between studs. It comes in a roll, and keeps its shape quite well. .......

No, 16 ohms is the impedance. The DC resistance will be lower (although 8 ohms seems a bit low for a 16 ohm unit). .......

Those amps a famous for the power they developed, not for their sound quality. Rather harsh. Work OK in a bi-amp system driving the woofers, but drive the mid-highs with something better, like a Dynac .......

The older averaging meters will give you accurate RMS of a sine wave, but only a sine wave. The true RMS meters were designed to give true RMS readings of complex waveforms, something an averaging met .......

That may be a good reason to use a fan on tube equipment. To keep other components from extreme temperatures. Place an electrolytic too close to a power tube and it can get pretty toasty. .......

It shouldn't be too difficult. I do know they needed fairly extreme boost in both ends of the spectrum. Like 18db in the bass. Nothing like increasing the power demands by 64 times to really limit you .......

The ST-70 was a great amp. Punched far above its price point. I used one for a long time for my mid/treble amp in a bi amped system. Sounded very sweet. David Hafler designed a very nice amp in the ST .......

I must have used a few hundred of those Peerless dome tweeters back in those days when I was building a lot of loudspeakers for people. That tweeter almost single handily drove the change to dome twee .......

They have a lighter voice coil assembly, so can be higher sensitivity. The magnetic gap needs to be deeper if you want a good Xmax, but that needs a heavier magnetic system. .......

If you notice, the 4 ohm rating is 350W. When you bridge an amplifier, each channel sees half the load, so using an 8 ohm load on a bridged amp, each channel sees 4 ohms, so it is double the 4 ohm rat .......

Most remotes (or maybe all) use carbon under the domes to contact the pc board. This carbon will break down over time, and the only thing you can do is replace it. Trying to clean it will most likely .......

I agree with Ralph. Power supply caps will usually introduce hum in the signal, but the scratchy rushing type of noise suggests a different issue. Coupling caps can sound like that if they are failing .......

Well, if you measure from one side of the transformer to the CT, you will get a reading. A center tap is nothing until it is tied to a reference, such as ground. .......

I agree. The benefits of bypassing PS caps is mainly for RF bypass, where electrolytics become inductive. Bypassing coupling caps is pretty much useless. Just pick a decent cap to start with. Here .......

Not real difficult. The LX5 can be eliminated completely. It provides the low pass for the woofer, which will be done now with an active crossover. The HF section of the LX5 contains the high pass fil .......

As other have said, electrolytics can dry out in storage. Old electrolytics should not be used. That being said, however, I have had good Japanese receivers on my bench that still had good performing .......

I have never had a problem soldering polystyrene caps without a heatsink. The leads are usually so thin that they dont transfer heat very well. Use good soldering practices and you will be fine. ::: T .......

The early Symphonies used the 8" mid and the 8 tweeters. I think the crossover points in that version was about 200Hz and 1.6kHz. Later versions went to a 6" mid. Those crossed over at 400 and 2.5k. B .......

Is it in both channels? I would suspect a capacitor. Scope the various stages and see where it appears. Loose sockets can certainly cause crackling noises, but since it makes noise on turnoff as well, .......

If they do not specify that they are stable into low Z loads, then you must assume that they are not. Many pro amps are stable into 2 ohms, but not many HiFi amps claim to be. .......

Do you have any test equipment? Use a DMM and measure the power supply rails. It is probably a bipolar supply (+ and - rails). After you do that, a better guess can be made. .......

I think this is the same as the P-2200, but without the meters. I have 2 of the P-2200's, and use one for bass duty in a bi-amped system. It has the best control of the woofers I have ever experienced .......

The FW100 is a bridge rectifier. Probably OK. I would suspect a cap, since you now have hum. I dont think the LM317 (IC1) regulator chip is the problem, since it still works. .......

The math only works with a sine wave. This is not a sine wave, so both are most likely correct. The meter is giving you an RMS value of the somewhat random signal. The scope is giving you the p-p valu .......

Dont overlook the First Watt amps from Nelson Pass. Plenty of power for horns, and a very tube like sound. You can even build your own for not a lot of cash. .......

I used 511's with 802D's crossed at 500 (bi-amped) for many years. They compared very favorably with live symphony events playing the same piece. I used a tweeter above 8k to help with the rolled off .......

I find a tweeter is still needed with the 802. They were designed to roll off at around 8k, the upper limit of the optical soundtrack on film. .......

Banging on the side of a TV was common back in those days. Most likely, it was a tube socket problem, and banging on the set jolted the tube enough to somewhat restore function, at least for a while. .......

There really isnt a 'gain envelope'. Amps DO have gain, of course, but amps are linear devices. Once gain is matched, it should stay linear at any setting. Mismatched amps are used a lot in biamping. .......

Phase and timing issues dont seem to be that audible below 500 or so. Look at the KHorn. 3 or 4 feet difference between the mid and the bass, and a big difference between the mid and high, too. ::: TO .......

The VOT sounds better on the low end than the LaScala. More extended. I like the Altec 802 and 511 combo better than the mid horn on the LaScala as well. .......

Do you have a multimeter? If so, measure the voltage on the output plug, using the VDC setting on the meter. If it is a DC PS, you will measure 12V or so. If it is AC, you will read very low or nothin .......

Like Coner mentioned, make sure your PS is DC, and not AC. If it is AC, you may have destroyed the opamps. It should require very little current, so I would think any wall wart would have enough. ::: .......
