Just a thought. Japan electronics use 100v in the primary. If your convenience outlet is NOT 100v, all voltages out of the secondary change, - whether the B+ or the filaments. .......

DIY'ing a 300B amp would so much easier (and safer) than doing it with an 845. half the plate voltage, much less voltage swing and current from the driver... plus 1k5vdc (or higher) capacitors aren't .......

we re-did friend's GM 70 mounting over a year ago. instead of buying another socket, we just used an aluminum band around the base, and then soldered the wires to the pins underneath. no more problem. .......

aside from the plate supply voltage and bias, the 300B filament requires 5v, whereas the 2A3 filament needs 2.5v .......

I agree. I think the 5687/E182 is more linear than the 6DJ8/6922. But with the miniscule voltage swing in that topology... It might not matter... The 5687 I think are used in the higher-priced AN DACs .......

"tuning" an amp takes some study, and a few weekends. heheheh you might want to post schema of your DAC and amp at the tube diy or SET fora. the guys there are very handy with soldering irons, scopes .......

you can buy a can in art stores. it's sometimes sprayed on paintings or charcoal drawings as a fixative if you search the tweakers' site, you will find other guys spraying it on PCBs and discrete comp .......

just an idea. you mentioned that you intended to use teflon tubing when you do use those cyro'ed wires and you're just worried about oxidation. hang the wires somewhere, and spray them with damar varn .......

my problem with those stiff pins is they can't be spread out. which is okay, i suppose, for manufacturers. but diy'ers solder and desolder a bazzillion times and they are kind of hard to do with the p .......

assuming usual EL84 drain, a 120 ohm DCR choke should be around 10-15Hy or so...Perfect to replace that with a choke. Just make sure DCR is 120 ohms or a little bit less. .......

I supposed it can be done. but a braided copper shield would work better. if you can't buy just the braided copper, buy a co-ax, and then pull out the conductor and the insulator, and you're left with .......

Hello Mike. Those chips in the digital board are supplied with 10v I suspect. or maybe even as low as 5v. There should be a voltage regulator along the way, from PS, before it goes into the ICs. Your .......

just a suggestion : install separate switch for heaters and start your PS with a choke. this will : ensure sufficient heat inthe tubes before high voltage is applied, and help prevent cathode strippi .......

WOW !!! just a suggestion : why not use the 300B for the TAD and possible tweet. and then bring up the woof to, say, 100Hz or 150Hz... High-pass the 300B at both the RC coupling (if any) and Rk by-pas .......

get a bigger choke...higher inductance a plus, and the higher dcr pulls the voltage down.... compute how much voltage you need to drop, current rating, and give it to your winder. .......

"economy" models used to use the field coil as the choke in the accompanying amp. although, i would assume that using a field coil allows one to tailor the magnets to taste... different voltage/curren .......

Hi Dak. A putt-putt-putt sound usually means insufficient de-coupling between stages (when more than one stage gets power from the same supply). To get lower voltage for input, one usually uses resis .......

as much as is practical. heheheh. I drive my 300B with 45mA. I've also seen factory 300B amps driven with just 1mA. I suggest you search AA for posts on this - Paul Joppa's and Thorsten Loesch's part .......

if the amp does not distort with "simple" material, and clips with complex material... am thinking of intermod distortion, which could be caused by various factors : leaking caps which alters bias, dr .......

you seem to be describing "clipping" which could be caused by not enough "power" or not enough "drive" etc... not impossible to solve, but requires a lot of work. .......

AFAIK the filtering of ultra high freq noise in the analog domain occurs in the transformer coupling between the DAC chip and the tube output stage. I have seen AN stand alone DACs and I didn't notice .......

since there's no answer from brian, here's my take : (1) you probably mean DCR (resistance as opposed to impedance); (2) a grid choke with around 5000 Hy inductance would probably have DCR of around 1 .......

if you are DIY'ing, go for direct coupling. there is no way that any cap or IT can be better than 2 or 3 inches of wire. Provide negative voltage for driver to zero your final's grid .......

Try it. You'd be introducing LOCAL negative feedback which should lower gain and make for a more linear behaviour. Just lift one leg of the cap. Listen. You can resolder if you don't like what happens .......

DHTs like the 45s, the 2a3 or 300B are very linear. i would use these tubes whether I rectify with SS or vacuum tube. now the tube rectifier you need would depend on the tubes you use in the amplifier .......
