The VT-99 is a pre-wwii 6SN7GT. I like the VT-99, but you may want to try a 6SN7GT, although good ones are hard to find these days. Don't bother with 6SN7 tubes, just the GT, or the even rarer 6SN7W. .......

It's also about the dynamics in the recording and the electrical load curve of the speaker across the audible frequency range. A 4 Ohm speaker of low sensitivity would not pair well with 2A3 Amp + a M .......

They will image well in any size space. That is their forte. What to drive them with: almost any PP tube amp with > 20W, although I have used a 300B amp at 9W. However, they really sing with a 65W PP .......

The Harbeth is "polite", while the Stirling Broadcast has some "body" to it. I've never owned ether, but am familiar with both and prefer the Stirling. Both need some PP power to be at their best. ::: .......

I'm not sure the comparisons between SET using directly heated triodes (DHT) and SE using the EL34 and 6550 is particularly apt. However, in class A PP, both do very well and actually do a better job .......

No, not really a good idea. You's need at least some kind of adapter to attenuate the output of the amp into headphones. Unless the adapter has adjustable impedance, you'll hear hum through high imped .......

I can offer only anecdotal evidence. I can drive a 8-9W 300B SET power amp and a 12W Class A triode-wired pentode PP power amp with a pair of LSA3/5a speakers (10 Ohms), but they sound better on 97dB/ .......

The roll-off from about 8-10K is very ragged and audible. Some mfrs. solve this problem with a cross-over to a ribbon tweeter. Their mid-range is gorgeous, and I can do without bass below the mid-40 .......

I prefer 44.1/16 NOS, because oversampling sounds edgy and fatiguing. Also, oversampling destroys the tone of some instruments by sharpening the sound they produce. .......

Unless you use a TVC, it's like connecting an attenuator (a resistor) to your digital front end's output. Once you know the range of impedance values for the resistor you can figure out the rest using .......

Try the KT66. It's less "rough" than the KT88 or 6550A and better all-around to my ears. I've just never liked the EL34 for some reason, and no longer have any PP or SE amps that can run it. 6 or 12V6 .......

I have never heard of an AN(UK) P2ES. They make the P2 PP and a P2 SE power amps. Both use the 5881 power tube and both produce around 20W (The PP a bit more). They are reasonably priced (for AN(UK)). .......

It's been my experience that a high impedance speaker can present a friendly load to a tube amp, even if the sensitivity of the speaker is quite low (for example a 9W SET driving a speaker with a 10-1 .......

That's what I was taught. But just to make sure, I use the same cables between all my components, and the speaker cables are made by the same mfr. They only make one IC and one speaker cable. ::: TOP .......

I agree with the two previous posters. It's very easy to get started, especially if one already has a Mac. (I've never gone down the PC road, as it looks too complicated for novices). .......

He used to review a lot of SET gear. Now he's been relegated to high efficiency speakers and vinyl. He hasn't reviewed an SET amp for Stereophile in a long time. That's in line with Stereophile's audi .......

Many have been written up in Stereophile. But they won't all sound the same to your ears, by a long shot. My own choice would be an Audio Note AX1, very similar to the Rogers LS-1. Better to buy some .......

Danish is somewhat of a tonal language, with vowels that are very close together in sound (to the English ear) and hard consonants (in English) that are hardly sounded in the middle and end of a word .......

But if it sounds bad out of the box, send it back. Your brain will adjust to the sound over time. If it sounds good out of the box and gets even better, that's OK with me, but there's at least a chanc .......

Sad indeed. I have a pair of his 2A3/45 monos. He was always so helpful in guiding me through possible changes in components and circuitry. He did it all by ear + experience and never stood still. ::: .......
