I'd use something that would have been available at the time of the speakers manufacture, such as the rubber cement you've mentioned & only coat the rear of the surrounds where it can't be easily seen .......

I have had this 4 way active system configuration for about a year now. The Onken 'WA' bass cab is the one constant that hasn't changed, but all the horns, drivers & tweeters have changed quite a bit .......

It was one of the ribbon wires leading to the coil. It had come unglued from the plastic outer ring and was resonating on loud HF peaks. Glues it back down & voila, no more rattle. .......

You're using a tube line amp with a cathode follower output correct? If that's the case, then the output impedance is too high to drive the input transformer. .......

Well, it certaily makes the set up of the system much easier. Soundwise it is ok too, I can detect a little hiss at higher volumes though, but that is to be expected from pro equipment. .......

I'd do something with a higher Rp such as a 50 or low voltage 211. Somehow the higher Rp tubes are better sounding in the Hf range than low Rp tubes such as 300b, 2A3 etc. .......

I quad amp with a digital crossover. I agree that most active crossovers are not totally silent & they do add a certain character/noise of their own, but nothing beats the tuneability and ease of use. .......

What is the current rating of your transformer? 3A will cover most of the rectifiers out there. You may get a little 'speed' with directly heated rectifiers like the 5u4, but since the draw from the 6 .......

Make sure pin 1 on XLR goes to shield on phono connector, and XLR pin 2 goes to tip on phono connector. >> I've done that & also tried shorting pins 1 & 3 together, but to no avail. Check the sensitiv .......

The BAF 379's diaphragm is user servicable and the ring that holds the diaphragm is somewhat like those in the older bakelite 288. I'm quite sure there is an external shield surrounding the magnet str .......

The book recommends 4.5K load at Ep 400v. Unfortunately I only have 3.5k & 6.5k OPTs. I suspect most will tell me to go with the 6.5K, but this will involve much amp modfication as opposed to the 3.5K .......

Hehehe.... I did this to a 0.47 Audio Note cap too. I think the cap is vacuum sealed & by letting air in the conducting surface will probably oxidize & cause the cap to go bad or something. Probably w .......

Most people here will agree that power supply smoothing is better achieved by using chokes & reducing the capacitance. My advice is to use a CLCLC design, with a 10uf for the first capacitor and by va .......

Spend as much as you can on the OPTs. So be it if you must use a stereo chassis. You can always partially isolate the two channels with resistors & caps. .......

The esaiest way to determine the authenticity of a GEC KT88 are the lack of holes in the plate structure. As far as I know, there aren't any current KT88 designs what don't have holes in the plate. :: .......

I don't think thay were heat sensitive by design, but they do discolor & flake off after hard use. Same thing for the decals on KT66s. .......

I use a 100uf cap for 780 ohm plate resistance(300B) as a baseline and adjust accordingly for other tubes. (Ie. 45 = 50uf or so cap) .......

Hard question to answer. Generally, film caps give you more detail but some could sound harsh. Oil caps are 'smoother' sounding, but tend to be less detailed. Take into consideration the type of speak .......

If you use a tube rectifier, the extra capacitance will shorten it's life. As far as possible, try not to increase the capacitance too much. If you have space, put in a choke or better yet two, to tam .......

Look into the plate structure for the beam plates. If you see an angled structure then they're real, chinese made have square ones. I'll say these are real and are of late 70's- early 80's vintage. :: .......

The internal connections are slightly different. You should check the wiring on the sockets to see if the manufacturer of the amp used any 'spare' pins as terminals. Go here & do a search for the diff .......

After 2 years of procrastination, they are finally done. The rectifier is a directly heated U20 with thernistors on the filament leads. The 171A is coupled to the 300B via a Sowter 8423(I think) inter .......

Why do you need NTCs on a indirectly heated rectifier GZ34? If you used a 5U4; that I can understand. Also, why NTCs on the HT winding? wouldn't it make more sense to have them in the rectifier heater .......

That 47uf cap may be shortening the life of your rectifier. Mullards can take that cap, but I'm not so sure Sovteks & Chinese can in the long run. .......

Actually I do have a pair myself. It is true that Quad II's are not the last word in Hi-fi, but they are pretty good if restored properly. IMHO, if you want something 'better' than the Quads, then go .......

The amp actually started as a 2A3 (Ken Rad NOS), I thought that was good until I put the #45's in & rebiased. Man! What a difference! The clarity, air & extension was quite a bit better than the 2A3, .......

As far as I know, Cetron 300B's are made my Richardson Electronics. They were the next best thing to the current Western Electric 300B's until the TJ Mesh Plates came along. Ken .......

Try to incorporate an additional choke in, for a CLCLC configuration. This way you can use much smaller caps; the suppression is better and the rectifier has an easier time keeping all the caps charge .......

If you want more ambience go for the 1005. I agree with Tom about the JBL 2440, you can neck up but better not to neck down. If it were up to me I'd just get the 1005 horns, use those with your curren .......

Jake, A single 416-8B isn't too hard to find. Check ebay. Tuning the crossover will probably be your biggest headache. You will probably need to turn down the horn quite a bit and put some damping mat .......

I find that wavy foam over the bitumen panels is good. I tried long fiber polyfiber, but it wasn't as good as the foam (to me). The stuff I used was for the filling of bed comforters. Ken .......
