The bypass on the Lokius drops volume several db's when it is engaged. It is quite noticeable. Much more than the Loki. If you want to A/B you really need a tape loop. But when used it has other benef .......

Unless you have already done so you should disconnect everything from your amp except your speakers. Any hum. No? Then your hum is caused by something in your audio chain that is plugged into your amp .......

I have the Knardahl set and it is very good. But I have room on my shelf for more of Grieg's music for solo piano so I ordered the Steen-Nokleberg set as well. Time will tell but $50+ for 14 CD's make .......

No. There is no real benefit in leaving it on when its no longer going to be used (on a specific day) and you will only cause unnecessary and early death of your tubes, especially the power tubes. But .......

FWIW, the last time ARC worked on my unit they replaced the PS tubes with Sovtek 5881's with coin base. Worked fine (for me). I think the 6l6GC's have more output and may not be suitable, but that's a .......

I think that with a tubed unit the heat induced circulation is a real issue for dust, less so for SS but still a potential contributor. The most dust problems I've had, i.e. I was constantly cleaning .......

Both. I select power tubes 1st then fine tune with the small tubes. The power tubes make the biggest difference when selecting the type, then the brand. It helps a lot if you have sonic goal in mind .......

Tubes do not have an intrinsic bias. What I think you are referring to is a 'bias point', a number assigned by the seller in the tube matching process. A 'bias point' of 60 would be OK if your amp man .......

At 82db my first set of speakers revealed no noise. My next speakers were 86db and there was some noise from tube pre-amp. With speakers at 92db it became obvious! At 100db it became a problem! Tubes .......

I've been fiddling around with Primaluna amps for a while. I find selection of the power tubes is of primary importance and then fine tuning the sound with the 12AX7's then the 12AU7's. FWIW all KT88 .......

Sonic Frontiers SFS 80 stereo and SFM 160 monos were designed around the KT90. Nice and powerful amps. I owned both and they were fine using those tubes. .......

Yep. Really works well, doesn't it. FWIW, hearing sound outside of the space between the speakers should only occur in a properly set up 2 way system when the sound is out of phase in the recording. S .......

FWIW I bought some of the high end Stax Phones in the mid 70's, can't remember the model # but they were SOTA at the time and sounded fabulous. Except they fit on the ears and were not too comfortable .......

IMHO most of the sets are dense and somber, but Bernstein's are full of life. Upbeat! Love them, at least as much as you can love Schumann's symphonies. :-) I have the Wiener (Vienna) Phil set on DG. .......

The SP8 is a revered old 'tube' preamp. It may be old but still has a following. The SP 14 is a tube pre but the tube is for the phono only. It is really more like SS and sounds it. IMHO. I'd own the .......

I change my tubes when the sound starts to deteriorate, i.e. the highs start to role and the bass looses a bit of umph. Catastrophic tube failure is IMHO not so much a problem of age as it is of how y .......

but the Silverline Bolero's have found a permanent home in my music room. These speakers are easy to drive yet very revealing without rolling highs at all (Esotar tweeter) and mid range and bass Dynau .......

A tube change will likely make a bigger change than a DAC change, tonally at least. It is a lot cheaper and there are quite a few tubes that sound much cleaner, clearer, even warmer, than the EH6922's .......

IMHO a little boost in the bass at low levels can be a good thing BUT to increase the bass as a method of increasing bass at moderate to high levels of amplication can cause your amp to clip pre-matur .......

Some auto bias circuits are adjusted for optimum performance with certain groups of tubes, i.e. EL34's, 6L6's etc vs 6550's KT88's etc. While all of these tubes may sound OK, if the amp was optomized .......

I prefer the more 'modern' nature of Sibelius' music. Berglunds thinning out the orchestration allows one to see into the symphony in a way that large scale (and dare I say slow in many cases) perform .......

Not with the typical tube amp. 80w at 8ohms - 80 wts at 4ohms. SS usually increases power with lowering impedance. Optimally 80w at 8ohms would be 160w at 4 ohms. .......

Those amps can be configured to operate off of 2 ohm taps (a simple internal change). They come pre-wired for 4 ohms. They put out 160 watts per channel. There is no reason why they can't drive your s .......

Speaker impedance curve and amplifier type can be a big issue. Type of tweeter can be a contributing issue as well. Nice to have a recording which you can use as a guide for this that you can use cons .......

I'd suspect the small tubes are the problem and switching them from one side to the other is so easy. But, FWIW, I've often traced noise, especially intermittent noise, to proper seating of tubes both .......

I've run a Benz Glider both at 47k and a 100 ohms. At 47k it had a little (actually a lot) loss of 'body'. At 100 it was getting too dark. My point is that loading was a BIG issue and the range on the .......

that is you have a matched trio and you bias it separately on each side. So perhaps all you need is 1 new trio. Cary has different models and some have provision for matching pairs so check your manua .......

Before you assume it is a leaking cap, which is rather unusual in a newish amp, I'd suggest you first make sure that all of your tubes are seated properly - they can come loose and a poor contact can .......

The up-sampling function seems to smooth out the FR and with old CD's with rough edges, so to speak, makes them more listenable. With more recent recordings the 16/44 takes on a bit more life. I like .......

I'm presently using 4 different digital front ends. One SS left on 24/7 and 3 tubed, 2 turned on each day, and one left on 24/7. Each of these units clearly improve for at least 15 minutes after they .......

Some excellent observations already re ARC amps - if you are going to service this yourself GET A MANUAL and follow the instructions. Re bias - If the tubes have already been used by the prior owner, .......

I've used both in three different amps. The SED's are a bit more linear. The Tung Sols have a 'bigger bass' perhaps slightly warmer mids and a softer top end. In two amps the Tong Sols sound quite go .......

You don't mention whether or not these are 'matched' tubes (a pair doesn't make them matched) and whether or not you have biased them identically (or at all). I've bought many tubes, even those claime .......

Probably the way they were recorded in the first place. They are unique in that respect (a little Googling about how Cozart/Fine produced them might interest you) and are a lot more 'fun' to listen to .......

As I recall the original JR149 had what ammounted to zip cord wired direct to the speakers at its output from the cross-over board. Take the capoff the bottom and you will see it. You can do the same .......

By adding the attenuators you will effectively ruduce the gain and hardly notice any degredation in sound. By pursuing alternative tubes to get the same gain reduction AND get a satisfactory sound wou .......

I think two things come into play 1) the recordings seem to have minimal compression, ergo the very quiet moments - it can be tough in a lot of rooms/systems to hear the quiet moments properly without .......

My Cayin came with a Cayin badged 6cg7 but upon close inspection the tube revealed itself to be a Chinese 6N6 tube which doesn't look like other 6CG7's I have nor does it sound like them either. I won .......

I have an amp which allegedly uses 6cg7's - they are rebadged with the manufacturers name. I have EH and EI 6cg7's and this tube neither looks like them nor sounds like them. The obvious difference is .......
