I think triodesteve is on the right track. Speaking from my own experience, upgrading capacitors in the crossover and the HF drivers to Altec or GPA tangerine 902's produced amazing results. ::: TOPIC .......

846B's over here, but swapped the crappy 806's with new (prior to the mega price increase) GPA 902's, replaced the capacitors and added snug fitting foam horn surrounds, a la model 19. Love them. ::: .......

Maybe they made the Platter Matter which was made in Canada as well. Try Googling that. I had one in the eighties and it drove me nuts due to the stickiness of the material. .......

I love these reissues, they sound incredible. I'm paying C$40.00 a copy at my local (Toronto area) record shop, but I think they're worth every penny. How much are they in your neck of the woods? ::: .......

As a Valencia (B version) owner myself, I'd say the spec is probably understated slightly. .......

It's only used on the outer edge suspension and it can migrate over time. But, I'm doubtful it would impact the voicecoil/magnetic gap to cause an issue. .......

I had the horizontal orientation called Carmel with the identical driver load. Definitely not lacking in bass! It does sound like a wiring/polarity issue with your Malibu's. .......

It has been postulated that there may by issues when the P-P signal exceeds the battery RMS value. Easily solved with a signal derived bias supply, IMHO. .......

I have an OEM pair that I restored several years ago. I have two recommendations: 1. Bi-amp only. Don't even bother trying full passive, the difference is huge. 2. If you can swing it, use TAD TD2002 .......

I would have a close look at the fiter caps and probably replace them all, they are likely fairly dry. The ST was the machine used in hi-fi retail and some manufacturing, but the Amber's were the cat' .......

Hmm...I can't be much help but my new KAB SL-1210MG5 seems to be the opposite, I.E. not enough anti skate for a given setting. Try floating the arm with zero balance and carefully rotate the anti skat .......

If you want to use the 6146 types as power tubes for audio, watch out for the screen grid voltage rating. If I recall correctly it was quite low in comparison to the plate. .......

Check out the JBL 4333/4343/4350/4355( and 4345 if you can find a pair). My prefence would be the latter four. With a little work upgrading capacitirs/replacing L-pads, etc. you might be very surprise .......

I haven't heard the Amber, BUT - if you are handy with a soldering iron, the Onkyo 9090 modified with the usual Pooge-type mods, IC's, caps, etc. is stunning. I have not heard a better tuner in terms .......

Yes, been there and done that with one of my 125's. There is a a multi-pole slide switch that changes speeds, try cleaning where the sliders connect to the board. Be careful not to bend the switch fin .......

Go here and search "polarity". It sems many of the older drvers were - positive voltage to black gave positive, outward pressure. Somewhere there is a link to a paper from JBL that gives a very clear .......

Sounds like they are Quad II's and are a classic amp with two EF86, one GZ32 and a pair of KT66's per channel. You are better off with a 240 volt to 120 volt transformer to run them in N.A. It is prob .......

Yes, I had a pair. Mine had fried output transistors so I scavenged the crossover boards and fitted them with all new metal film resistors and poly caps. They now are fine "real Altec" crossovers, 12 .......

On horn loaded speakers on my system, it's strange - but with my P-P tube amps I always tend to prefer Ultra Linear operation over triode, except when listening at low levels. It's kinda weird, I know .......

I have used a rubbing compound on one of my TD-125's that is supplied by "Numatics", makers of spool type solenoid valves, with good results. Their spool solenoid works with a very tight tolerance sim .......

I agree with Eli. A Mark III operates at fairly high, punishing voltages, so a solidly built rectifier tube is called for. Some folks have used the GZ37 despite the fact that it needs 3.0 amp filament .......

I have heard very little difference using RCA 6L6GC's from the early sixties compared to GEC KT66's in my Quad II's. I don't recommend the Sovtek 5881 or their KT66. Good luck, Charles. .......

Normally voltage regulator tubes such as 0B2 and 5651 where referred to as cold cathode tubes according to my old RCA data. I suppose it could apply to any tube which does not have a heater to create .......
