My recall after testing my Sangean was it did not have flat response out of the analog RCAs or on the digital out through the DAC. The flatness problem was done in the digital filters. I would try it .......

I would also clean all your RCA interconnections - both at the cable ends, and on both the tuner and next stage. A hum is a very common sign of poor ground connections on one or both phono plug cables .......

Usually modern caps don't go "dry" like in the old days of tube radios. If run hot or for a long time they can go bad, but bad ones in solid state tuners are somewhat rare. I would get a current meter .......

Just trying to dispel some myths here... There are 2 types of dipole antennas, one is about 72 ohms, the other about 300 ohms. The impedance is independent of whatever "leads" are attached to the ante .......

For an FM tuner, as you increase the RF signal strength using a multi-element antenna with passive gain, the signal to noise ratio continues to get better. Remember the quieting curves magazines used .......

The noise is likely from HD radio, but there is possibly another thing going on. When testing tube based IF filters, I've noticed their bandwidth gets wider as the IF signal amplitude gets stronger. .......

You have FL301 downstream that also has some sort of low pass roll off, and likely they have combined that with your 4700 pf / 4.7k to get 50us. My best guess is to replace the 4700pf with 10,000 pf .......

I skipped the mods and instead use an outboard DAC from the coax S/PDIF output. It totally transforms the sound with a decent DAC. This tuner has limitations in that it overloads easily in analog mode .......

I have done this on the 600A, and will warn you in advance, I don't recommend it. The voltage levels ob the 600A are too high for the 6CW4 tube, and you risk damaging it. You need a more advanced test .......

Be careful; to fully evaluate RF or IF tubes on an even playing field, you need to re-align the RF/IF stages after every swap. The tuned circuits will respond differently to the slight changes in tube .......

It appears that the unit has a .1 to .15 volt drop at full rated output, powering the SB2, so the 5.2 V regulator works super. I guess the drop could be in the wire. I'll check to see how bad the sag .......

I don't think anyone mentioned it, but also keep in mind that tubes in tuners wear out. Usually the RF amp tubes wear out more quickly than the others, and can make a big difference in the tuner sensi .......

I had one of the REL Precedent on hand for a while, it is a very interesting design. I believe I remember others saying it was built more like a military communication receiver than typical commercial .......

I agree, most likely a bad coupling cap or electrolytic cap in the MPX unit. I would start with the electrolytic cap first- there is one around 8-10uF or so. I would also swap out all the MPX tubes, i .......

Forgot to ask - what do the FM tuner meters say? Do they show strong signal strength? if not, it is in the tuner area. If they do, it is in the audio output / switch area. This could be a dirty switch .......

Sounds like a bad ground. Check all chassis screws/bolts as corrosion can cause boards that are supposed to gnd to the chassis to float. Trouble in both mono and stereo, but faint reception could also .......

Interesting story. I wonder though if you had a Scott 310, or one of the lesser models? The 350 has a very short IF path, especially in the limiter area, which would affect the AM suppression / multip .......

I thought the 310C/D/E are the same RF/IF circuit as the 4310? These models are infact better than the 350, with a better IF stage for more selectivity. The Scotts are pretty amazing for reception whe .......

First, stay with a near top of the line vintage unit, i.e. the most expensive ones made by the company at the time, if you can afford it. If you are into DX'ing get one with at least 2 IF filters, i.e .......

I have the 310E, 310D, and 335 MPX. The 310D/335 will not have the muting relay on the MPX output, at least not stock. You can rewire it though, and then it will be very much the same. Some will like .......

One Fisher you forgot to mention is the KM-60, a great unit that sounds really nice. It is similar to an FM-100B without muting. But does have the gold cascade RF amp using a 6922 type tube, like the .......

No problem, I have 2 8080's and love them. They really benefitted from a good alignment though, they were off by a good bit. Sansui had a good grasp on tuner design, and put decent tuners in the high .......

You can use the KT-6500 tuner glass. These are the cheapest ones I know of that you can sacrifice to get a KT-8300/9900 glass. Also KT-7500. Not sure about others. Bob .......

I'm not familiar with that Kenwood, we know the KT-7500/KT8300 models and how to improve those. A buddy just put a tube output stage in a KT-6500 as well! I would bet it will respond nicely to the gen .......

Yes, the Sherwoods will live forever, as they use very easy to find tubes, at least in my experience. There are no lurking rare ones, like the FM3 display tubes. That one on there for 125. buy it now .......
