There always seems to be a thread here which goes like "What is the best speaker for $$$$ or under $$$$." Lots of speakers get thrown out, but kit speakers are not usually mentioned.

Many kit speakers are available as fully assembled speakers from the kit company. These speakers offer exceptional value AND are often customizable with the veneer of YOUR choice as well as other options. The only area in which I don't believe kit speakers are competitive is with "flagship" speakers like the Pass Labs Rushmore ($40,000) or the Dynaudio Evidence ($80,000), just to name a few. The one exception is the Orion, which is probably the best dipole on the market bar none.

While you cannot saunter into your local dealer to listen to them, some offer in-home auditions. You won't find reviews of these speakers in hardly any audio magazine, but if you are willing to form your own opinion about a speaker, you may be very pleasantly surprised. Your pocket book will definitely be happier as it's hard to find a finished kit speaker which goes for much more than $5,000. Speakers can get a lot cheaper when you don't have middlemen, advertising costs, and CES shows.
