Of course the sample size was not large enough for meaningful scientific significance. However, I don't really think that is the point. In my opinion this test was truly a colossal upset for the vinyl community. The terms of the original challenge were not altered one bit and nobody suggested that the original challenge was not meaningful. But, you're right, it was absolutely ridiculous from a scientific point of view.

The irony of it is that I went up against the most elaborate and expensive stereo system in the world with my antiquated 1995 Audio Alchemy CD player using Monster Cable M-550i interconnects and Mike failed his own challenge on his own terms with his own stereo system in which he personally selected every LP. To make it worse, he failed not against high-resolution digital, but against mediocre 16/44 Redbook digital. To me, that has to be the biggest colossal upset in vinyl history and as far as I'm concerned it vindicates Redbook as an accurate reproduction format with every bit the finesse of vinyl.

With regard to the other blind test participants, they selected Redbook every time thinking it was vinyl. Again, the sample size was probably even smaller than for Mike's tests, but isn't it interesting these participants thought that Redbook sounded more like vinyl than vinyl itself even on the most expensive system in the world.

You say that this was just a minor test and no one in their right mind would generalize it to anything about vinyl vs. digital. Common, give me a break, Ted! Vinyl fanatics are not in their right mind and this was a major win for Redbook and a colossal upset for vinyl. At least, that's the way I see it.

Best regards,
John Elison
