Nice looking table. A couple of comments. The reason to upgrade by adding a separate speed control unit does NOT have to do with accurate speed. Most tables are reasonably accurate as far as gross speed variations are concerned (even people with perfect pitch cannot hear a small inaccuracy in speed). Good controllers are designed to reduce the rapid pulses (cogging) in the rotation of the motor by accurately splitting and changing the phase of the AC current feeding the different poles of the motor. The superior result would not really show on a strobe disc, but would be audible.
I am also not sure that you would improve the sound with a weight instead of using the supplied screw-down clamp. VPI uses a washer under the spindle so that significant clamping force is needed to be applied beyond the diameter of the washer to force the record into contact with the platter (reflex clamp). Even a big weight would not necessarily do this correctly. Also, additional weight is NOT necessarily a plus if it increases wear of the main bearing and if it increases noise from the interface between the thrustplate at the bottom of the main bearing and the ball at the end of the spindle that rides on the thrustplate. I expect that VPI engineers the whole table, including the clamp, as a system that works well together.
