when comparing the 103 and 103R. Compliance, stylus, weight etc. are all the same. The R does have better quality copper inside too but if he didn't like it compared to the 103 it can only be because of output level differences or the setup, perhaps the 103 was per chance better aligned.

I personally feel the "R" is all around the better cartridge but only if you have both to compare at the same time.
