I got my 1200 about this time last and tried carts in this order:

Stanton/KAB Groovemaster - Horrendously horrible. HF way rolled off.
Shure V15VxMR - Nice, but a hair dull and uninvolving.Tracked nicely.
Grado Reference Platinum - Nice and rich, but insanely sibilant.
Denon DL-103 - Very nice. Solid from top to bottom, nice mids. I could go for a smidge more HF and LF extension, but this one was, by far, more my cup of tea than the others. This one ended my cart juggling and I could live with this match for life, but likely won't since I'm insane.

I ended up getting the KAB dampener somewhere along the line, but didn't have it with the Grado or the Shure. I don't know if it would've helped those two because it sure didn't help the Groovemaster. I think the SL-1200 with the DL-103, going through the Jolida JD-9a phono-pre, is just budget vinyl magic. I would like to try an AT-OC-9 though :-)
