I've used both a Dynavector 17D2 (MSRP $750) and an Ortofon Kontrapunkt "a" ($600) with this arm and been extremely pleased with the results. The "a" (Output .45mV) is slightly leaner overall and tighter in the bass. The 17D2 (Output .26mV) is a bit richer in the mid-range. Both will give you all the air, soundstaging, and detail you want. With a little shopping you should be able to get either for less than the MSRP and closer to your preferred $500 budget. Both are bargains.
