Dave,
listening anywhere below 12:00 on a log pot just screams gain mismatch. This is probably true for almost any integrated I had before running the Fi Y & X combo, though. And from experience most pots are not stellar at tracking at the, but usually better than 6dB off. A stepped attenuator would certainly be much closer.
Attenuation in any form is an evil thing. Consistently listening with 40dB of attenuation simply means you have 100X too much gain. The problem is that my listening habits require being able to listen at 65db loudness (late night) as well as at 95dB for rocking the house. Any volume control should therefore have a good range of at least 30dB. Around the 65 dB loudness range the tracking error is somewhere around 2dB, still noticeable as a shift in the balance.
Probably I have somewhere in there 10dB to much gain for my purposes. Running the Fi X amp with a passive or even just with the Edler Attenuators mentioned above and without a pre might be the way to in that case for normal volumes.
Again thanks very much for your comments. Let me know if you have any further suggestions.
With best wishes,
Rene
