Dave,

I understand that most hobbyists don't care about measurements, rules of thumb, or established design practices (in the "engineering" sense). I also understand that they don't design amps with the intention that other people try them out and build them, or design amps that could be used with any system other than their own.

I think this discussion is for those who do.

If you want to build a 2A3 SE amp that does a clean 1/2 watt - please be my guest, I wish you all the luck. But I fail to see how a discussion of such an amp is relevant here, or how transferring that knowledge is useful to anyone else.
If you aren't building amps that are improvements past designs, then you're merely tube rolling. The initial poster asked for *improvements* on the Angela 2A3 driver stage. Suggesting a driver stage with worse performance is not an improvement, by anybody's standards. And by what standards do we evaluate possible improvements to offer him? Gee, I guess we better come up with some objective parameters, huh?

So, instead of being critical of my attempt to frame the discussion, perhaps you have a design to offer? Or can you contribute to a discussion of why the Angela SRPP dirver is a good idea, etc.? This would be far more useful than calling me comical for trying to decide what a fair minimum output for his cd player would be.

I first measured the open terminal voltage while a test disc was playing a 2vRMS 1kHz signal. I then put a pot across the terminals and adjusted it until I read 1vRMS at the output. Removing the pot and measuring its resistance gave 1050 ohms.
