In my experience - the more stages you cascade - the sound is worse.
And the driver stage swing/distortion - see, for example, distortion tests by Pete Millett (a few months ago), or tests by Morgan Jones in "Valve amplifiers"-3rd edition. The "ordinary" 7N7 (one section) with active load have k2= -52 dB and k3= -85 dB with Uout=19,5 Vrms. With 2Vrms in and 39 Vrms out you can expect, say, 6 dB worse distortion (but still acceptable). And this is enough (32 Vrms or 45 Vp) to drive the 2A3 to full output.
