"Maybe direct couple the first stages."

If you can, I think it's better to direct couple the last two stages and cap couple the first. If designed right, then overload will happen on the output tube first and then the driver tube second. A direct couple on these last stages will offer quicker overload recovery with no cap charging and discharging. It will leave the cap coupled stage to remain intact - never overloaded.
