Last weekend, I compared the 12L Actives to the consumer passives. Two different animals. One is aiming for flat response in a nearfield position (3-4ft away) so that a studio mixer hears exactly what was recorded.
The other is a "high-end", "audiophile speaker", which is "voiced" to "sound good" to an average person, in an average sized room, which is medium damped, at an average distance away from the speakers....phew! More design choices involved in a far field speaker, for sure.To hear what music "SHOULD" sound like, I think that folks should listen sometime to some good quality nearfield monitors in a nearfield position. It was quite "ear opening" for me the first time I experienced this. I must say though, that alot of folks feel that nearfield monitors are a bit too bright if listened to at the usual distance of 7-10 ft. away, unless they can really control/dampen up the environment. For me, I like the detail of good flat response monitors, and I think that with the help of room treatment and the promise of the new digital EQ systems, I suspect that more "audiophiles" might start gravitating towards them as well.
Only YOUR ears can decide, so don't take my word for anything. My opinion is worth even LESS than what you paid for it. :)

ps-this weekend, I'll be comparing some new Sapphire XL's, Onix Ref 1's, and Quad Actives to try to quantify the differences.
