I have the Quad 22L and they have none of the issues you fear. I absolutely love them.The upper frequencies are smooth, sweet, clear and detailed. The midrange .....the same. The bass is nice. Depending how close to the back wall and side wall you place them, will decide the bass.
Too close to the back wall and side wall, and the 22L will deliver boomy bass. Move them out and take some time postioning them, and you will get nice tight bass.
This is my experience with them. I guess your milage may vary depending on source equipment and room acoutics.
