We're starting to see some 4-way towers and 3-way monitors that do this. NHT has a new dome "midrange" that pretty well operates from ~500Hz to 5kHz or something like that. I won't know for sure for awhile. The biggest reason is to get good dispersion - large midrange cones don't have good dispersion. But if you have a 6.5" going up to 500Hz or so, a 2-3" cone or dome up to 5KHz +/- and then go to a smaller tweeter that has good HF dispersion, then you've got something. Poor upper midrange dispersion is one of the reasons many speakers just don't sound engaging or natural. B&W's implementation of Kevlar is really beamy. You not only have to sit the right distance away, but if you move 1' to the left of right, the space around the speakers collapse.
