The B & W 705 is a very fine speaker!

I wasn't looking for a speaker in the heyday of the CDM 1NT and I have never heard it. However, I did audition the B & W 705 and it is a very fine speaker. The response is very smooth and they throw a big, wide image. They do very well on male and female vocals, full orchestra with massed strings, mixed chorus, piano and lots of other music.

From the technical reviews on Stereophile.com, the CDM 1NT has a hump in the midbass which the 705 does not. The bass response of both is pretty good, although obviously differently balanced. Both have a smooth, wide response. The 705 is about 3 dB more sensitive, according to John Atkinson's measurements.

I had put the 705 on my short list. The speakers I chose have a somewhat different balance and more distant perspective, which I think probably makes them a little more forgiving of some recordings. They were also less expensive. A subwoofer can help any small speaker I've ever heard but the 705 has adequate bass response to sound good with most music. I think I could live very happily with a pair of B & W 705s.
