Well this reinforces my premise that you just don't know what you are missing. Right now on Agon there is a pair of Caliper signatures in minty looking condition for $800. Grab them and I bet you will love them. A frame and a box are not the same thing. By definition a box is closed on all sides whereas a frame must be open on two (typically the two largest sides). While there may be some resonances, these will most likely be relatively small due to the low moving mass of the drivers. Certainly, it is less of a problem than a high moving mass (relative to a thin plastic/aluminum foil panel) cone loading up a box in a high pressure high resonance environment (not to mention standing waves and energy storage/release). Even a vented box acts like a closed system above the resonance frequency. The room is a problem for all speakers but I have found that about 1 meter is enough to give very good performance from my Apogees (30Hz in room response). A box within in a box is even a worse solution don't you think? As to the Constaintine Soo review, it is clear he has a high efficiency speaker bias (I do not having owned Klipsch LaScalla's in the past and loving some of their strengths while hating their weaknesses even more) and low power tube amps. It is possible he was not driving the Apogees with appropriate amplification.
