Interesting observations, particularly about the Magnepans (I sort of expected your Audio Note rave :) ). I too have had my uncertainties about Maggies and this is coming from a dedicated planar speaker owner! I recently heard the big daddy Magnepans (the 20.1s) at the High End show in Munich driven by the new Jeff Rowland 201 amps and a Synergy i preamp. Well, the mids were phenomenal as I have found to be true of most planar speakers, the highs were extended and clean but also sometimes a bit sharp (I am still not convinced by a true line source ribbon of pure metal). Bass? Well, not so good lumpy and without impact. Generally, I would attribute this to room setup as the wall behind the speakers was glass. However, they were more than 6 feet from the wall and it is possible to get good bass from planar dipoles. I am wondering though if it isn't endemic to Magnepans because of the way they tune their big rectangular bass panel. Personally, I can see how the bass might bother you and I am sure that the Audio Notes have greater impact (but perhaps less well defined) in the bass. This is not, however, necessarily true for all planar speakers. See, I have Apogees and they have incredible bass with real impact and a transient response there that no cone can compete with (not to mention a midrange to die for and smooth detailed treble). However, the bass panel is a trapezoid not a rectangle and this affects the resonances and Q of the panel quite alot. However, having heard a bunch of box speakers again has reminded me of their inherent colorations and lack of coherence and this makes me say "no way".
