SPDIF is thankfully going to be obsolete soon - with the advent of USB/firwire signal transfer. Although not without their problems they seem more sensible ways of transfering digital audio data. SPDIF is so dependent on other factors as well like the connectors and the cable length (mine sounded better when I increased the cable length)
