I use the internal clock in the DIO for AD and DA - reasoning that the DIO with it's seperate PSU is less likely to be influenced by noise and power supply fluctuations in the PC case on the PCI bus. I play audio with Foobar using Kernal streaming and upsampling to 88khz. I also record my vinyl using Adobe Audition ( Cooledit pro)I built some cable attenuators for the output of the DIO so it didn't overload my amp. I built my own PSU for the DIO (a large torroid transformer coil in a box) and bypassed the caps on the input and output audio stages. There are loads of mods you can do with the DIO but it sounds pretty good to me at this stage. The weak link is likely the SPDIF so I'd like to get a USB outboard DAC at some point. For an improvement in vinyl recording I would have to spend more on the TT and phono pre rather than the digital side. To be honest the sound quality is as good as I need at present.
