imaging shifted from side to side, seemingly with frequency changes. Having paid no mind to where the wires fell behind the equipment, their unshielded nature may be exposing them to the surrounding fields. Or perhaps I did a lousy soldering job.

That is strange. It could be the fields...do be careful to cross at 90 degrees if you have to cross other wires. If you are on a carpet, try lifting them off the carpet with cylinders of construction paper or 3 sticks held together with a rubberband in the middle (forming a tripod). I haven't experienced that...it could be they are just breaking in.

Yeah, the imaging with these cables will spread things out a bunch. I am an imaging freak and I dig what they do. If you want a more condensed image (read less wide less deep) you could twist the + and - conductors together with a drill. Go slow and test it with a meter for shorts before hooking it up...the enamel is thin and it is possible that you could short the conductors...just be careful. But IMHO you will be losing a lot of the magic.
