Hi Earl

Since the test in the paper is repeatable, it would seem it does describe some ability to detect something related to distortion, at relatively low levels, at least in a quiet setting with sine waves.
My guess would be that if one used music, then this detection threshold would be significantly higher and higher again if noise were used.
I would however be surprised if it turned out that the huge disparity between the sensitivity at say 20 Hz compared to say 100Hz, did not also impact the detection of the harmonics.

On the other hand, I am not familiar with your tests of this at low frequencies, how did you do them?.
Did you specifically examine the lowest few octaves? What did you find down there?
Do you find the audibility of non linearity (excluding time issues) of an electronic circuit to be fundamentally different than a loudspeaker?

Also, I would partially agree that loudspeakers and horns don’t produce higher order distortion.
The problem begins when you drive them with a significant signal, lets say typically above 1/8 rated power.

We also drew different conclusions about this board, I was under the impression that many of the folks here were interested in and some even had Horns.

“You are continuosly quoting your credentials. I have them too, but they have no bearing on the facts.”

Earl, I have no credentials other than what I have done for a living, it is hard to explain the context sometimes with out also citing how the conclusion was drawn.
Also, remember sometimes you come off as an infallible academic steamroller, it can be hard to discuss things when the intensity is set on “11”.
I know you consider what I propose even if you disagree, that’s enough for me.
Best,

Tom
