Whoops... Tired last night and it appears I dropped the URL. Don's web site has a number of AES preprints. There is an efficiency doc there which may be the one you were referring to.
As far as pro drivers go, there are some that say the JBL 2226, for instance, is inferior for hi-fidelity purposes to the 2235/2234 from a previous generation. The changes in spiders, surrounds, etc., to support high power "pro" applications with high restoring force have perhaps been detrimental. I haven't had an opportunity to A/B, and without bandwidth constrained source and double-blind (ooh, bad word) it would be very easy to persuade oneself one direction or the other. I just was going to point out the paper while directing you to the other one as well.
