Tom

I think that the point that we will agree on is that the higher the output and the larger the enclosure the more practical and attractive a LF horn becomes. But there is simply no way that a LF horn is going to yield the output that I get from my 15" in the same size enclosure - about 3 ft^3 max volume response to 45 Hz with MAX SPL somehere in the high 120's.

As with so much we argue about the situation is quite different for Pro applications. Getting the MAX SPL is the name of the game and this can be tough without over-driving the woofers, which is very typical at Pro events. So in that application I too would give serious consideration to a horn (although none of my clienets ever seem to want to do this). But I have been, as usual, talking about the smaller high-fi venue where achieving a desired SPL does not pose a particularly difficult task at LFs and smooth colorless response is a high proiority. In that situation, I find, for the reasons that I have stated, that horns don't offer an advantage and in fact cannot be made to work effectivly in the smaller volumes.

But I just cannot accept that nonlinear distortion in a 15" driver in a home situation is an issue that needs to be resolved. It's simply not important and in this case, loading and limiting cone excursion is not a design requirement. In this application, that removes a horns advantage.

I hope that you can find some agreement with this point of view.
