Its called the "near field" and it is not guaranteed to be the same as the far field, it is usually quite different. The diffraction from the edges of the mouth, which influences the far field very strongly, are misrepresented in the near field, especially on axis.

This is nothing new and I can quote numerous texts which talk about this effect, if you want to read about it.

It is "theoreticaly" possible to measurethe complex frquency response in the entire plane of the mouth and from this to extrapolate to the far field. This is called "near field holography", but I don't know of anyone doing this seriuosly. A couple of Itallian associates of mine tried this but found that it didn't work too well.
