That little box at one end of all Transparent cables contains a capacitor. It is an elemental part of the design of Transparent (and MIT) cables to use capacitance as a way of filtering out UHF and RF nasties and to reduce "characteristic impedance", which is a function of inductivity divided by capacitance. Therefore you are quite correct; use of a Transparent cable with a passive preamp could well have negative effects on high frequency response and other elements of performance. The Nordost design could not be more different from Transparent. Nordost cables present minimal capacitance and have a much higher characteristic impedance than most other cables on the market. (This is in no way intended to put down either approach, but with an active preamp I strongly favor Transparent vs Nordost.) At the very least this comparison should have been done with balanced vs single-ended versions of cables from the same company with the same design philosophy.

Yes, it sounds like it needs more extended listening or different samples/setup. - cjfrbw 12:51:43 02/7/05 ( 0)
