I only choose components that have been tested with objective testmethods. I don´t let any subjective thoughts influence my choise. The crusial thing here is it is very few who knows a good method for determine if a component is affecting the sound or not. The first one might suggest is that this only includes messurements. This is wrong. Most people here are comparing two or more differnt components and pick the one the think sound best/most correct. This is however impossible.
Some of the posts suggest that you could learn how the real thing sounds. If you went to a concert and listened to a violin playing the solo part and then one day later went to see the same concert you would probobly not hear if the solo violinist had changed his instrument for a another violin. Yet there could be such differents between the two violins that you would say they were different regarding the sound.
Different brands and models of the same instrument can sound quiet different. Such simple thing like good or bad sets of strings could make easy hearable differences.
The conclusion is you can not use your experience of different sounds to determine if a reproduced sound is correct or not.
So what to do then?
You have to seek another method. The method I use is in simple words, to compare the signal before the object(the signal that was put in to the object) with the signal after the object(the signal that comes out from the object). I don´t compare two components because the lack of reference. I listens to the differences of the sound before the object and the signal that comes after the object. This is the only method I know of that can lead you to the truth about the audible correctnes quality of a component. The method in itself can be explained if someone are interested.
I often compare the real thing with the reproduced signal but even then it is impossible to know if it is correct.
I would say that the people that uses subjective methods to determine if some component is correct is guessing. They may have narrowed down the area were the misstakes could appear but the significans is quit bad anyway. This is probobly why the different hifi systems sound so different from each other.
