This is an ineloquent solution, but one COULD use recording level controls on a tepe deck as volume controls; however, this would mean rhe "Record" & "Pause" buttons would be engaged--probably not great for the cassette deck over the long haul. Sonics may well be less-than-spectacular, as you say.What seems to be another problem is the XLR tape outs--all my tape decks have been RCA inputs ( I realize there are adaptors).
