Social conformity is a powerful influence. Who wants to be the one in a group who didn't get it right, whether an audio test or the punch line of a joke?

Eyes were closed (stated such during the test, but only presuming so for the vote), but there may well have been a sense of jostling or other cues.

A slight refinement would have been to have them mark a card at the end of each round and then not total until the end. This would have reduced (though not eliminated) the social variable.
