I do Believe John when he says to not believe completely in numbers, as they can be fudged easily. Take for instance the THD spec on an amplifier, it is meaningless if you ask me. Since I cannot hear anything less than 1% 3rd order or higher unless test tones are being played, I find it to be an irrelevant spec. Not to mention the amplifier's dampining factor, just use a higher impedence load, and the dampinging factor goes up.

Distortion is unwanted noise. However, when it comes to my ears, I have given up long ago as I said before. I cannot trust them, as they cannot hear a difference between amplifiers. Perhaps I am just handicapped?

I do know engineers build tube amps, and obviously they want to lower distortion.
