Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

DRC(Dynamic Range Control) and PCM Downsampling are...

supposed to both be DVD specific (Page 63). My interpretation of the settings...feel free to add your 2 cents as general confusion reigns over these settings:

PCM Downsampling : 3 positions On, Auto and Off for 96 KHz non-aware systems (older receivers) processing DVD soundtrack.

DRC/Dynamic Range Control : 2 positions are On or Off.
Supposed to apply to either 48/96 KHz encoded DVD soundtrack only

On "my" system, I have found that these settings are non-volatile...meaning that they stay if you unplug the unit. (Ooops...just realized that I may have had the default settings preset from the beginning...I'll check on this point later. The dimmer level=1/2 definitely is non-volatile, though)
A week ago, I used an external 1x non-oversampling DAC with 44.1 KHz standard Redbook CDs and determine "my" settings to be downsampling=auto and DRC=on. Things have sounded fine using the internal DAC with these same settings. I'm not sure if the downsampling setting made a difference but I found DRC=off to be a bright and hard for my taste.

Question for Toshiba Engineers (Manufacturer) who are getting a kick out of reading/lurking about their mass market creation's impact on this AA forum: "Are these audio settings effect on Redbook playback a side-effect of your design and should these settings have any bearing on either the digital outs and analog outs using standard CDs?"

Mike, have you noticed any differences with the "FL Dimmer" setting (page 66) and between the "FL Select" (on remote that selects between time and track display) ?
