The argument that everything affects everything else is always true at some level (I once read the estimate in a physics popularization that the gravitational influence of a single electron in the most distant galaxy we know of [approx. 15 billion light years away], if magically nullified for one second, would change the weather on earth in about a week's time compared to its steady influence), but in practice we have to limit our analysis to preserve our sanity.
IME, cables can be made to have little enough effect on the signal so that the amplifiers and speakers become the limiting factors on our satisfaction. Getting to this stage is not simply a matter of buying the most expensive cables around. They can be made by a reasonably diligent klutz for little cash, but obtaining the knowledge is the hard part.
