For me, the first theory is more applicable to P/C's (amplfiers) and the second to I/C's and P/C's for source. Case in point for the second theory is an A/B between a Vampire Wire AI-2 and Bel-the wire. Both cost about $200 meter. Tonally, they sound identical but the BEL is significantly more transparent.
