I have a Taiwanese friend who is not in the audio business, but he is an audiophile (sic). He imports and distributes textile production machinery. His school-mate in Taiwan owns a big wire and cable manufacturing plant, and actually makes the cables for Transparent, MIT, and a few others. According to him, they make up the speaker cable sets, but ship them to the U.S without the added components and the "box". The components and box are added at the U.S. facility so as not to give away and propietary secrets to the Taiwanese. According to him, they pay the Taiwanese factory about US$60 for the pair that sell for over $5k in the U.S. Nice work if you can get it I guess.
