norm..i had the opportunity, last week, since i received the ic first,to try it with the valhalla speaker cables, that i own, before the hms speaker cables arrived.i had been using audio tekne ics, that i guess i should have mentioned in the initial post, and replaced these with the hms. the immediate difference was not subtle.the initial ic box setting was on '0',which is the neutral setting. i played a patricia barber cd,3 tracks at a time, and started advancing the settings clockwise,1-2-3..etc.the first few settings sounded a little congested with a blurring of micro details and softening of the transients somewhat.once a got past '5' or '6' the details started showing back up and i stopped at '8' thinking this was the ideal setting.things just sounded right.i then took the ics over to a friends house who has a similar system to mine and let him hear them.we did a similar, although not as exhaustive, comparison, and came to the conclusion that the '0' setting was the best in his room...which is much smaller then mine.i came home and put the ics back in but left them at '0' for the comparison test with the valhallas'. that's where i am at this point.addressing the second part of your question i did find that the HMS ic made a big difference when replacing the audio tekne ic.whether it would make a bigger difference in your system to replace the ic vs the speaker cable is a difficult question to answer.i do know that replacing the hms ic alone,in my system, was an eye opener.i hope that helps.if not,let me know.
