Accuphase power conditioners perform realtime correction of the AC waveform to achieve the same result, a perfect sine wave. Unlike the PowerPlants, they run quite cool.

I would love to see how they do this. Kind of like counting on gobs of negative feedback to correct errors that have already taken place. For this to work, the circuitry and corrections would have to be quite quick or side effects would be measurable. Since we are not dealing with anything above an appr 60 Hz signal though, it would not have to be a "speed demon" though. Sean

One way of doing this would be to use a differential amplifier and an internal reference sinewave generator. Tie one of the differential amplifier inputs to the incoming AC waveform, and tie the other input to the internal reference (a means of synchronizing the internal reference to the AC powerline would also be needed). The differential amplifier would output the difference between the reference sinewave and the AC powerline, giving you the error signal. If you mix the error signal back into the AC waveform, you should have a clean sinewave - without having to regenerate the entire thing (much greater power conversion efficiency, and much less heat). It could be done with or without global NFB.
The above is just a rough outline - to build a working version would be somewhat more complicated.

David: Have you (or anyone else) looked the ExactPower designs? Or better, has anyone compared them to the Accuphase? ExactPower's approach seems to be _very_ similar to Accuphase.regards, jonathan carr
PS. I don't know about you, but I am happy that the rainy season is still holding firm. Anything that delays the onset of summer heat is welcome. :-)
Thanks for the interesting link, Jonathan. I hadn't heard about the ExactPower unit before. It does appear to do pretty much the same thing as the Accuphase PS-1200, and at a significantly lower price to boot.PS. Out here in Nasu, rainy season is immediately followed by thunderstorm season, which then segues into typhoon season. I'm personally looking forward to October. DS
