I used to own one and I liked it. I played it a few years before upgrading my Thorens turntable to a Sota Millennia for which I bought a very expensive cartridge.
You're right about the DL-301II being a high-compliance cartridge. It worked well in my SME III tonearm. I initially installed it with the SME headshell weight and later discovered I didn't need the weight.
My DL-301II sounded very similar to my AT-OC9, although the AT-OC9 might have been just slightly better sounding. At any rate, I liked both cartridges and I play both for a number of years.
I discovered I could improve the bass performance and overall transparency of my SME III by wrapping the arm in black electrical tape. Here is a picture of my old Thorens TD-126 with the DL-301II.
