Re: DIY Armageddon - Advice Needed Please

The circuit in the Linn FAQ is identical to the one in the link below that I have built. It uses a single 110 volt secondary on the transformer and one 3.3K ohm resistor. The one in the link that you refer to uses a dusl 48 volt secondary on the transfomer (lets call this 96 volts for comparison) and two 3.3K ohm resistors in parallel (1.65K ohms).

THe differernce is that one achieves more voltage drop in the transformer and less in the resistor to compensate. I don't think it really much matters where the voltage drop comes from and the final voltage is a debatable number anyway. People say between 65 and 90 volts is best. You can play with that number to get the results you are looking for.

As you reduce voltage the overall music presentation gets smoother but it also struggles through difficult passages and at startup. I find it unsable at 65 to 75 volts and that a number between 80 and 90 volts seems to be the best comprimise. This is also what both Linn and Naim try to achieve with their power supplies. Note that the motor was originally desgined to operate at 115 volts.

The capacitor values are fine. I think you will like this much better than your Valhalla. The Lingo is debatably better but at one heck of a price tag.
