If you haven't got a mono switch your options are limited. My favourite cartridges for vintage mono vinyl are the Shure M3d, Shure M44E or M44-1.I have a Denon DL102 which was designed to play stereo records. It has a restricted frequency range, so it can sound a little dull on some records, but it is great for beaten up 45s.
If you're looking for a vintage sound then it's a good choice, but if you want the best from your records I'd go for a more modern cartridge.
My favourite tip size for these records, in good condition is a .0007"x.0004" elliptical.
