Before you dump your M44s, like any cartridge it needs to be matched to the rest of your equipment, even for 78s.
I respect the Stanton 500/Pickering V15, but for me they've never been as involving as the M44 for playing 78s. Everytime I've tried a Stanton/Pickering I go back to the Shure to get my reference sound.
Getting 78 styli for them is as easy as getting Stanton/Pickering 78 styli.
I've got an N44C with an Expert 3.5 Full Conical Rounded tip which they recommended for Edison Diamond discs and it also works with 11½ inch centre-start Pathés.
If you like the sound you're getting from the M44 stick with it.
