Agreed Stanton 500 with 78 stylus....

"What are the performance differences with 78 cartridges anyway?"

78 grooves are 3 to 4 times wider than LPs and need heavier VTF to keep the stylus securely in the groove - from at least 2.5g upwards. Most "hi-fi" cantilevers and suspensions are too delicate and can't take the punishment. A lot depends on the condition of the record.

In most of the 78 era there were no standards regarding groove size, but a 78 stylus with a 2.7 or 3.0mil tip is a good compromise. Most aftermarket tips are 3.0mil. A lot depends on the age and condition of the records.

The Stanton 500 and Shure M44 series are ideal cartridges for 78s and are used by professional transfer engineers with aftermarket styli. I've read that Stanton may offer a 78 stylus again for the 500. I should also mention the Shure M78S cartridge which is an SC35 type strapped for mono. But it only has a 2.5mil stylus.

Grado, Ortofon and Nagaoka(IIRC) also offer 78 cartridges or stylus options.
