I checked out the Elcer range of mixers and they look better than many DJ ones.
Like my Leak Varislope III, your Quad 22's phonostage possibly isn't up to the rest of the pre-amplifier. I've tried a ProJect Phonobox and home made stages and they all sounded better than the Leak. However, as it's in a "vintage" system I'm happy to live with the sound of the Varislope with a suitable high output cartridge - Shure M44/M3D or Pickering 380A work well.
In my limited experience I prefer a separate phono preamplifier to an integrated one, FWIW I think you may too.
