Neither of my Garrards have been restored and I'm not in the high end of moving coils or vintage SPUs. But there have been recent changes and one is now "vintage" and the other "contemporary".
The 301 now has an Audio Technica AT1005/II arm, cartridges are Shure M3D, Goldring 600 mono/78 backed up by Shure M44 for 78s.
The 401 has a Jelco SA750D, cartridges range from Ortofon MC10, Denon DL-103, DL-102 Mono and 8 differently tipped Shure M44s for 45s, mono LPs and shellac.
The Garrards are versatile and seem to work with any arm or cartridge combination - if there's a new trend maybe it's a reflection of that versatility.
